A conspiracy theory is an attempt to explain the true, ultimate causes of significant social and political events as the result of secret plots by two or more powerful actors, rather than as overt activities or natural occurrences. While a "conspiracy" refers to a true causal chain of actions and events, a "conspiracy theory" refers to an accusatory perception that may or may not be true.
